Behind The Bench

Established in 2011. Handmade in Brooklyn, NY.

All pieces are hand made in small quantities with limited availability. We believe in having pieces that are unique and special, not mass produced.  We use ethically sourced stones and recycled metals. Everyday we strive to grow with compassion for the world and want the brand to reflect as such.

About the Artist

Born in Chile and raised in Miami Florida, Sunim Choi first discovered her love for metalsmithing in college while attending Florida International University in 2001.  She further developed her skills when she moved to New York in 2007 at Studio Jewelers.

She started her company, Ra Metals in 2011 specializing in amulets and bold geometric jewelry. She is now bringing her original vision of lasting, meaningful jewelry to engagement and wedding bands.

She is currently the studio manager and Metalsmithing teacher at Fitzgerald Jewelry located in Williamsburg Brooklyn.

Inspirations: The sun, the ocean, miami art deco, mr. bungle, colors pink & gold, and her rescue mutt pup Casey <3.

† The invocation of Rā̛ †

Named after the Egyptian sun god, Ra Metals is abstruse yet profound.

For the enigmatic being and opposition to the masses.

An invocation to the spirit of rā̛ and all that he embodies.

Our Promise

Every month we donate 20% of our profits to a cause we find important. We believe that if everyone does just a little, a little bit will go a long way.

This month we will be donating to NEW WOMEN NEW YORKERS, a nonprofit organization that provides workforce development and other programs to empower immigrant women to obtain meaningful employment or pursue higher education in NYC, and offers a safe, inclusive space where immigrant women can build community and share their stories.

Core values

Inclusion & diversity: New Women New Yorkers believes in the vast potential that every immigrant woman coming to New York has to contribute to our city, regardless of her national origin, cultural background, or educational level.

Equality of opportunities: We endeavor to level the playing field so that gender, country of origin, ethnicity, family background, and other characteristics that are beyond an individual’s control do not impact a person’s outcomes.

Freedom to choose professional path: We strive to offer our participants with the resources and support they need in order to pursue their chosen professional path.
