Naja means crescent in Navajo and dates back to the 14th century where the Moors used it on the browband of horses as an amulet for protection and to ward of the evil eye.  Passed on from Spanish Moors to Mexico and eventually to the Navajo Indians where it is used mainly in squash blossom necklaces.
